Keep your greens fresh longer
Salad spinners make changing out the water quick & easy
Being on the road doesn’t have to mean you avoid buying fresh leafy greens, herbs, or veggies for fear of them going bad. You can extend the life of many greens by storing them in a bit of water in your fridge.
While I used to use a tall glass or plastic container, I’ve fallen in love with using an old salad spinner. Salad spinners are cheap and cheerful to use and the basket makes it incredibly fast and simple to change out the water, helping to extend the life of your produce.
You can make them last even longer by taking a couple seconds to trim off the produce ends when changing the water. I find this particularly helpful for lettuce heads where you can see the base of the stem starting to turn brown. This can help them stay hydrated a few extra days till you make it home from your next trip.
Added bonus #1 - creating a green basket adds visual appeal! No more lost herb packages rotting at the back of the fridge or the bottom of a drawer. Opening the fridge and seeing green is a good reminder to use them up.
Having fresh herbs last longer means more chances to add them to more meals
Having them front and centre also inspires increased use. Those extra herbs you bought for a recipes can now find their way into a whole host of other dishes simply by having them accessible.
Don’t forget, getting your daily greens is also super important for brain health (for more on the Mind Diet) AND meeting your intake of 30+ different plants a week for a healthy gut microbiome.
Added bonus #2 - looking at green plants has been shown to be calming and improve your mood, so set it out and enjoy that beautiful edible bouquet while cooking- it can’t hurt!
